ARTIST STATEMENT

I was born in Bryn Mawr, PA and grew up in Akron ,Oh. I attended Kent State University as a Design and Craft major from 1975-1977. In the late summer of 1977 I traveled around the United States for 3 months before ending up in Seattle, WA. I have called Seattle home since 1977. I graduated from the University of Washington in 1982 with a Bachelor of Arts in Textile Design. I worked with many textile processes on fabric after graduating from the U of W. In the Mid 1990's I got bored working on and with fabric and started exploring various painting and drawing techniques on paper. I also took classes to learn to make glass beads.

Mixed Media Paintings

Since 1999 I have been working with combining charcoal drawing and acrylic paint. I draw with soft compressed charcoal then paint with acrylic paint blending some of the charcoal into the paint. I mask areas of the paper creating a subtle collage effect to my paintings.

I have exhibited my work in Seattle and cities in the United States. My favorite places to show my work are public spaces like cafes, libraries, churches, pubs and schools. I have many works permanently displayed in public buildings as a result of the Washington State Art in Public Places Program.

The current theme of my work is Crows. I like their striking image, their boldness and their mystery. Good or Bad, I like the way they grace my surroundings and they demand attention. Crows rarely blend into their environment and their image is striking against the blues of the sky. I use the crow as a metaphor to express several ideas and concepts like emotions, relationships and life events.

Glass Beads and Jewelry

I have had a fascination with jewelry and beads for as long as I can remember. After spending lots of money on hand crafted glass beads I decided I needed to learn to make them. I took several lampworking classes at Pratt Art Center in Seattle, WA and learned the process. I set up a lampworking space in my studio and found that making glass beads is alot like learning a musical instrument to get good at it you need to practice, practice, practice. Making glass beads using a torch is a very magical process, the colors of the glass are fantastic and the rhythm of the process is hypnotic. I have sold my glass beads at fine craft shops and fairs.

Continuing Education

For the last 2 years I have been taking studio art classes at the Seattle Academy of Fine Art in Seattle, WA. I have worked with oil painting under the instruction of Margie Livingston and ink with Margaret Davidson. The Seattle Academy of Fine Art is a wonderful community of artists that has provided me valuable information, ideas, and resources.
